Managing your child’s screen time is easier when it’s “Do as I do”

We all know that actions speak louder than words and that parents are strong role models for their children. This means if you want your child to have a healthy relationship with screens, you need to create your healthy habits. But how do you fight off that constant pull toward your screens?  Little by little, incorporate each change before moving on to the next. The silver lining is that your life will be richer as a result.

Seven ways to change your screen habits and reap the benefits for you and your family:

  1. Look at your child when they talk to you.Benefit: Paying positive attention to your child helps them feel more secure and valued.
  2. Put your screen away during park visits, grocery trips, or other routine events.Benefit: Noticing the world around you and being curious about it will become a healthy habit for your child.
  3. Stop all screen usage one hour before your child’s bedtime.Benefit: Setting a schedule creates an expectation rather than a surprise when screen time is limited. An added benefit: Stopping screen time at least a half hour before bedtime encourages better sleep.
  4. Share quality non-screen time by playing a family game together at least once a week.Benefit: Playing family games allows you to bond with one another, establishes a routine, and helps your child develop social skills.
  5. Share quality screen time by reading a book or playing an educational game together online.Benefit: Sharing age-appropriate, stimulating, creative experiences with your child steers them towards high-quality screen time.
  6. Silence your phone, pause the TV, or put your screen to sleep while you engage with your child.Benefit: Removing the temptations to constantly check your screen helps you prioritize your child – they’re more important.
  7. Plan an outing once a month to a museum/art gallery/zoo/concert/sporting event or other place that stimulates curiosity.Benefit: Exploring a variety of real-life experiences with your child will not only create childhood memories but could also possibly spark your child’s passion.
